Deacon weekly on-call rotation

What exactly is a deacon ministry?

If you were to visit 10 different churches and ask someone about the details of their deacon ministry, you would most likely receive ten different responses. In fact, some churches seem to look to the deacons to do the entire ministry. In other churches, deacons are so busy with the administration of the church that they have no time for ministry and the deacon body ministry doesn't even exist in some churches. In all these models, many ministry needs go unmet. The details of a deacon ministry will vary from church to church; however, the Bible provides four common deacon ministry elements: (1) assist pastoral staff with ministry to the Body, (2) assist the church to build and maintain Christian fellowship and unity, (3) serve as exemplary Christian leaders in the church and community, and (4) the office of deacon is not an office of authority, but one of service.

As the deacons of the FBC Leland family our sincere desire is to exemplify these four common Biblical deacon ministry elements.  The intent of this information on our church web site is to help our church family and community understand the role of our deacon ministry and how the ministry is partnering under the direction of our Pastor to assist with ministry to the church Body.

In the past, the deacon ministry of our church has been responsible for deacon appointed committees which ranged from the finance committee to the kitchen committee and ultimately involved more "administration" duties. In addition, the deacon ministry was also involved in assigning deacons to each church family. In the year 2007, Pastor Dwight requested that the deacons focus on five areas of ministry which include: widows, decision counselors, hospital visitation, outreach visitation, and benevolence with the overall goal being to shift from "administrative" and "deacon assigned to family" ministry to "caring" ministry areas.  In October, the deacons voted unanimously to make the shift to "caring" ministry areas.  In addition, the deacons agreed to help clarify the rotation of deacons.  Below is a brief overview of the deacon ministry and the contacts for the deacon ministry areas

Brief Overview of FBC Leland Deacon Ministry

The number of deacons will be determined based upon the ministry needs of the church under the direction of the Senior Pastor.  Each Deacon will serve as an "active" deacon for three (3) consecutive years.  During this active status, the deacon will be responsible for attending deacon meetings and actively serving in the deacon ministry areas. After the three year "active" term, the deacon will be considered an "inactive" deacon which means the deacon will not be responsible for attending the deacon ministry meetings and does not have to serve in the deacon ministry areas. No deacon shall be eligible for reelection for at least one (1) year after the expiration of each term of service.  All deacons (active or inactive) are responsible for rotating as a deacon of the month to help lock and unlock the church facility and to be available for on-call weekly hospital visitation.

The deacons will meet at least quarterly during the church year.  The exact month we meet may vary but the Deacons will attempt to meet during the months of September, December, April, and August
